At the weekend, around 15 supporters of presidential candidate Ron DeSantis (44, Republican) gathered in front of the Disney World amusement park in Orlando. Unbelievable: the majority of them waved huge flags with swastikas!

Others held up pictures of DeSantis – currently Governor of Florida. After two hours, the demonstration was broken up by the police. According to a spokesman, there were no arrests.

“We are aware of these groups whose aim is to incite people with anti-Semitic symbols and insults. They are also aware of the laws,” a press statement said. He continued, “The Orange County Sheriff’s Office deplores hate speech in any form, but people have the First Amendment right to demonstrate.”

What is behind the neo-Nazi scandal?

A small war has been raging between Disney and DeSantis for more than a year. The trigger was the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law, according to which it was to be forbidden in schools to talk to children about sexual orientation and gender identity. Disney executives had publicly opposed the Republican governor’s bill.

A thorn in the side of DeSantis. He was outraged by the Californian company, which, among other things, pays low taxes due to a special rule. He urged Disney to give up those privileges, otherwise they might build a prison for felons next to Disney World in Orlando.

Furthermore, according to DeSantis, the company has forced its visitors to wear a mask during the Corona period for far too long. With the demonstration at the weekend, DeSantis supporters also opposed Disney.

Florida House Representative Anna Eskamani responded on Twitter: “It’s absolutely disgusting to see how visible Nazis have become in Florida, and it’s even more disturbing when they hold up signs and flags that the likes of Gov. DeSantis get supported.”

And further: “Every person, regardless of their political ideology, should condemn something like that.”
