Police Shootout in Hanoi Leaves Four Dead and 16 Arrested – Latest News Update

The shootout took place at two police headquarters in Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak province, Vietnam. As a result, 4 policemen died.

Reported AFP, Monday (12/6/2023), 16 people were arrested in connection with this shooting. Two of the hostages have been released.

The shooting locations took place at the Ea Tieu and Ea Ktur police stations. The incident occurred on Sunday (11/6).



Local officials and civilians were reportedly caught in the crossfire. The local police are conducting an investigation. The police have yet to provide a definite statement.

The Central Highlands, home to several ethnic minorities, are considered a sensitive area by Vietnam’s authoritarian government.

Several tribes in the area — the Montagnards — sided with the US-backed south during the decades-long war in Vietnam. Some are calling for more autonomy, while others are advocating independence for the region.

Gun violence is extremely rare in Vietnam. It is known that every Vietnamese citizen is prohibited from owning firearms.
