The Secrets Behind the Iconic Photo of Christ the Redeemer Holding the Moon

How did the artist do it?

Leonardo Sanz – that’s the name of the photographer – took his long-awaited picture this morning from Icarai Beach in the municipality of Niteroi in Rio de Janeiro, almost seven miles from the location of the iconic statue.

Now a photo in which a 40-meter monument “holds” the moon with both hands has become viral.

The artist said that he was preparing for the main picture of his life, studying the position of the moon. He figured out exactly when the moon aligns with the monument for this.

Sans used various programs to find the “time and exact date” when the Moon would be directly over Christ the Redeemer.

It’s important to know

“Christ the Redeemer” – a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The monument has a size of 39.6 m in height (an arm span of 28 meters), weighs 1145 tons and is located on top of the 200-meter Corcovada mountain in the Tijuca National Park, within the city.

Built as a symbol of Christianity, the statue has become a symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.

The outer surface is lined with soapstone, chosen for its durability and ease of finishing. The construction of the monument took five years, from 1926 to 1931 – and on October 12, 1931, the statue was unveiled. The cost of the monument was 250 thousand US dollars – a fabulous amount at that time.
