Sparta Rotterdam Coach Maurice Steijn Talks Contract Extension and Player Departures

It seems that Maurice Steijn is going to extend his contract with Sparta Rotterdam, but the coach does not want to make any promises yet. He will meet with technical director Gerard Nijkamp on Monday morning. Steijn also expects that ‘maybe one or two players’ will leave Sparta.

Sparta lost 1-0 at FC Twente on Sunday afternoon, so that a wonderful season is not rewarded with European football. “I am very proud of the boys,” says Steijn afterwards at ESPN. “We had a great season, but unfortunately we were not able to crown it in this way. We did put ourselves on the map this year.”

Steijn expects Sparta to be able to build on this success. “Yes, sure. Maybe one or two players will leave, but we want to keep most of them. We have also brought in some players, so that if something happens, we can switch immediately. I don’t know if we will be sixth again next year can be, but there is a lot of confidence that we can have another good season next year.”

Steijn previously said that he will most likely extend his contract, which runs until 2024. However, the coach does not yet want to promise definitively that he will continue to work at Het Kasteel. “Tomorrow (Monday, ed.) I have a meeting with the technical director, then we’ll figure it out. What the approach is? We’ll see that tomorrow. I’m not saying anything about which way it goes. First today, because I was with this I already said it before the match: tomorrow I have an appointment with Gerard Nijkamp at 10 a.m..”
