Final Destination of Netherlands’ Iconic Pieterpad Revealed After 40 Years

The Pieterpad has been around for forty years and will receive a final destination from Natuurmonumenten. The long-distance walk ends at the ENCI quarry in Maastricht. That spot is now marked.

It often disappointed hikers who had reached the end of the 500-kilometer Pieterpad. That end was not marked anywhere. Natuurmonumenten, the manager of the Limburg nature reserve and the Sint-Pietersberg marl quarry, has had a large painting frame designed and placed it on the top of the mountain on the finish line.

In front of the list is a pole on which walkers can place their phones, so that they can take a selfie with Sint-Pietersberg in the background after reaching the finish.

The Pieterpad leads from Pieterburen in Groningen to Sint-Pietersberg in South Limburg. The two friends Toos Goorhuis-Tjalsma and Bertje Jens from Groningen were the first to run the entire distance between 1978 and 1983. They decided to publish the route they traveled.

Since then, the Pieterpad has been the best-known and most popular long-distance walking route in the Netherlands. The Pieterpad Foundation ensures that the route and the route signs along the way remain up to date.

According to Natuurmonumenten, millions of people have now traveled the route. Forest rangers see more and more walkers and nowadays cyclists also end up on Sint-Pietersberg. Walking has become popular during the corona period and, according to the nature manager, this is only increasing.
