Nazi Era Symbols Still Present on Public Buildings in Germany

Even 78 years after the end of the Nazi regime, its symbols have still not completely disappeared from the public eye. There are still corresponding signs and lettering on several buildings in the country.

There are still symbols or lettering on three buildings in the country that date back to the National Socialist era. This emerges from a response from the Ministry of Finance to a request from the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament. According to the ministry, these are an imperial eagle on the outside facade of the tax office in Ulm and an imperial eagle in the interior of the town hall in Maulbronn (Enzkreis). On the College Building I of the University of Freiburg, above the main entrance, the lettering “Dem Eternal Germanness” is also emblazoned.

The reply from the ministry also mentions the palace of the Federal Court of Justice, where a plaque commemorates 34 Reich judges and Reich attorneys who were arrested by the Soviet secret police in 1945 and died under unclear circumstances. Among these were lawyers who were involved in unjust judgments during the Nazi era.

SPD demands complete removal

The SPD demands the complete removal of the symbols and lettering. “National Socialist symbols have no place on public buildings,” said SPD MP Martin Rivoir. In individual cases, an active, artistic discussion can also help. “Barely perceptible information boards, as some of which still exist at the moment, do not serve the purpose,” criticized Rivoir. Two more symbols and components have been removed since 2000, according to the Treasury Department.

For the imperial eagle on the facade of the Ulm tax office, work is currently being done on the text for a notice board that will explain the symbol, the ministry wrote in its response to the request. The same should be done in Maulbronn. After the war, the decision was made to leave the lettering on the college building in Freiburg as a memorial. There is already an information board there, on which an information text can be called up via a QR code.

There is also an explanation board on the building of the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe. In addition, a poster informs about current findings of a historical investigation.
