France Expresses Disappointment Over Sudan’s Decision to Call for Departure of UN Representative

France deeply regrets the decision taken by the Sudanese government calling for the departure of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNAMITS), Mr. Volker Perthes.

We commend the continued commitment and tireless work of Mr. Volker Perthes and all UNAMITS teams to consolidate peace and support Sudan’s democratic transition, and more recently, to secure a ceasefire. -fire and humanitarian corridors.

We give them our full support. UNAMITS’ mandate was unanimously renewed on June 2, demonstrating the Security Council’s full support for its essential work.

The clashes that have been taking place since April 15, 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces represent a dramatic setback in the peace process in Sudan and the transition to a civilian government. We call on all belligerents to stop fighting and allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Only the return to an inclusive political process, leading to the appointment of a transitional government and general elections, can permanently resolve this crisis.
