Understanding Hypogonadism: Symptoms, Effects, and Treatment

JAKARTA – If a man feels easily disturbed by his mood, tired, sweats easily, is obese in the abdomen or has a decreased libido, then the man must be experiencing hypogonadism or a lack of testosterone.

“Men who complain of getting tired quickly, have difficulty concentrating, decreased endurance, decreased sex drive, increased fat in the abdomen, may experience hypogonadism,” said an andrology specialist from Fatmawati Nugroho Setiawan Hospital in a dialogue entitled “About Men’s Intimate Problems” , launch BETWEENSaturday, June 10.

According to Nugroho, hypogonadism is a clinical syndrome resulting from the failure of the testes to produce testosterone levels and the number of spermatozoa. Apart from problems with the testicles, this condition can also occur due to disturbances at one or more levels of the hypothalamus axis (in the brain) so that testosterone levels decrease.

Testosterone for men is not only useful for regulating libido and mood, but also increasing muscle strength and volume, growing fine hair, and stimulating cells.

“Men who experience hypogonadism can be fierce, because their bodies are uncomfortable, their health is disturbed,” he said.

More than that, hypogonadism can also have an effect on the emergence of metabolic syndrome disorders such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease (stroke and coronary heart disease), osteoporosis, decreased physical strength, depression, decreased blood cell volume and sexual dysfunction.

“According to research, if a man is deficient in the hormone testosterone, he will usually experience metabolic syndrome disorders such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and vice versa,” said Nugroho.

Even though it is common in older men, it does not mean that young men under 25 years of age are free from this condition. If no problems are found in the testicular organs, then a bad lifestyle, an uncomfortable environment, and increasing age are also factors.

“Adding age, co-morbidities, and a bad lifestyle can cause complaints. The emergence of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis can occur due to a lack of testosterone,” he said.

He added, alternative treatment for hypogonadism is to treat the disease that is the underlying cause and if necessary provide testosterone replacement therapy.
