[Bangkok = Taiki Fujikawa]Wirot, the incoming lawmaker of the Progressive Party, who won the first party in the Thai lower house general election, has accused the police of large-scale corruption over the overloading of large trucks, and ripples are spreading.

According to the complaint, truck drivers paid bribes ranging from thousands to tens of thousands of baht each month to highway police to purchase special stickers. By sticking a sticker on the windshield, it was possible to reach the destination without being weighed at the checkpoint. Bribes can total as much as 10 billion baht ($400 million) annually.

Depending on the distance and the number of checkpoints, there are multiple stickers such as “Rabbit” and “Laughing Sun”, as well as “Po” from the American animated movie “Kung Fu Panda” and “Gian” from the Japanese manga “Doraemon”. was

According to the Thai Land Transport Association, corruption using stickers has been going on for more than 20 years. There are about 5.5 million trucks in Thailand, 20% of which are believed to be carrying more than the legal gross weight to save on transportation costs. Overloading damages roads, increases braking distances and increases the risk of accidents.
