Building or household contents insurance covers storm damage on and in the house. But what about the rest of the property?
“The garden is part of the property, and everything firmly attached to the ground is secured accordingly.” That explains Oliver Hauner, head of property insurance at the German Insurance Association (GDV). These include terraces, anchored swings and permanently installed lights.
“Clean-up costs that arise because, for example, trees have to be cleared away are also insured here,” says Hauner. If plants have to be renewed, it depends on the contract whether and to what extent the costs are covered.
The pool is also insured
A garden shed, carport, garden and greenhouse etc. can also be protected by home building insurance with elementary coverage. Pools are covered by both policies. Mobile pools are considered household effects, while permanently installed pools are part of residential building insurance.
Garages on the property are also insured accordingly, as they are considered outbuildings. Items stored there, such as lawn mowers, bicycles and tools, are also insured accordingly.
Prerequisite elemental damage policy
In general, household contents and residential building insurance policies only cover storm damage if the policy also covers natural hazards. Many insurers already offer this module as part of their new contracts. But it can also be that it has to be booked separately. The damage covered includes all storm damage, i.e. also after hail or heavy rain.
