New and Improved Interface for Priberam Portuguese Language Dictionary – Now Easier to Use on PCs and Mobile Devices

Since today, the Priberam Portuguese Language Dictionary has been presented to users with a renewed and easier-to-use interface, optimized for personal computers and mobile devices.

“O Priberam”, as it is popularly known, celebrated its 14th anniversary on the 1st of April, and this renovation will certainly contribute to maintaining its position not only as the dictionary with the most visits in Portugal, but also as one of the most popular Portuguese websites, in absolute terms.

Among the most evident functional aspects in this new iteration of the dicionario.priberam.org website, the search bar stands out, which becomes fixed, maintaining its position even when the page is scrolled vertically, the which makes it especially easy to use on mobile devices.

Other changes include the automatic visualization of images associated with the entries, whenever they exist (until now, this only happened if the visitor clicked on a specific icon) and a highlight just below the search bar with the most searched words of the day. It was also easier to select the Portuguese (default) and Brazilian spelling variants, marked with icons on the left side of the search bar.

Carlos Amaral, CEO of Priberam, said that “these are just the most obvious differences, among many others” and that the company “has taken into account the hundreds of suggestions left over time by users of the dictionary.”

“Furthermore”, stresses Carlos Amaral, “this was a change designed above all to facilitate visits and research by our users, who were instrumental in establishing the Priberam Dictionary as the most popular resource of its kind in Portugal”.

The Priberam Dictionary currently has 155,180 lexical entries, together with 8,683 phrases (total of phrases: 163,863), corresponding to 259,718 definitions, 90,086 synonyms, 8,652 antonyms, 92,467 etymologies and 1,317 collective names. It also includes 14,342 indications of verbal conjugation, 22,709 of pronunciation and 10,188 of morphology and, in addition, it accounts for 4,609 meanings illustrated with images.

In the first five months of 2023, the Priberam Dictionary had more than 19 million users who were responsible for more than 82 million searches made to date.
