Monkeypox Cases in Panama: No New Cases in Second Week, Distribution Remains in 19-59 Age Range

The distribution of the cases remains in the age range that goes from 19 to 59 years.

The Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported that, due to second week in a row, No new cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in Panama.

In the country there are 235 confirmed cases accumulated at 8 of Juneof which 89 were reported during the year 2022 and 146 cases so far in 2023.

Of the 235 accumulated cases, 3 patients are active (3 in home isolation and 0 in a health facility), while 231 people ended their isolation without major setbacks.

Until now, only one (1) death has been maintained, due to monkeypox in Panama.

In the accumulated cases, 233 men and 2 women have tested positive and the distribution of the cases remains in the age range between 19 and 59 years.

For its part, the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) reports that, until June 6, 1,603 doses of the monkeypox vaccine have been applied, with 1,131 first doses and 472 second doses.

The Minsa reiterates that people who are direct contacts and with HIV to counteract the progression of the disease.

Faced with this situation, the Minsa emphasizes that prevention is the most efficient weapon to avoid contagion with this disease.

The corregimientos with the most confirmed cases are: Bella Vista with; San Francisco; Calidonia or The Exhibition; Bethany; Juan Diaz and Tocumen; New Town, Lefevre Park, Río Abajo; Chilibre, Vista Alegre and Arnulfo Arias Madrid in San Miguelito.

Since last May 24, 2022, Panama has maintained a health alert throughout the country and epidemiological surveillance has been redoubled in all health regions and all points of entry into the national territory.
