Mercedes granted permit for Level 3 Autonomous Driving in California

The German car manufacturer Mercedes has received permission from California authorities to market cars with Level 3 autonomous driving assistance system in the state. This means that under certain conditions, on certain highways, the driver of the car may take his hands off the steering wheel and not look at the road, while the car is driving completely by itself. Mercedes is the first manufacturer to receive such a permit in California.

Mercedes previously presented its “Drive Pilot” system, which meets the requirements of Level 3 autonomous driving and allows the driver to distract from the road by looking at a smartphone or doing something else while driving. Mercedes is the fourth company overall to receive approval to launch self-driving vehicles on California roads, but the German automaker is the first to be allowed to market such vehicles to the public.

According to available information, Mercedes customers will be able to use the Drive Pilot system on highways in the vicinity of all major cities, namely around Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and San Diego, as well as several other locations.

It is important to emphasize that this system is only available for use on certain highways, during daylight hours and at speeds up to 40 miles per hour (68km/h). The system will not work when driving in the city or on minor roads. Also, it will not be able to be turned on during rain or when there is thick fog, floods or road repairs. While the driver may be distracted from the road and pass the time in other ways not directly related to driving, the person behind the wheel must be ready to take control if the machine requires it.
