Supervolcano Close to Breaking Point: Study Warns of Increased Risk of Eruption

The volcano, which is called a supervolcano, has not erupted since 1538. Now it is close to breaking point, according to a study according to CBS News.

In the peer-reviewed study from Italy’s Research Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology and University College London, it is stated that the volcano has become weaker over time. It increases the risk of an outbreak.

– We are not saying that there will be an outbreak, but we are saying that the conditions for an outbreak have become more favorable, says Christopher Kilburn from University College London to AFP.

There have been thousands of earthquakes which over time have stretched parts of the volcano to breaking point. In April alone, there were 600 earthquakes at the volcano.

Due to the tremors and the increased pressure, the coastal town of Pozzuoli has been lifted by almost four meters since the 1950s, writes The Guardian.

It is estimated that an eruption from the volcano could rise to category 8, which is the highest level in the eruption index.
