The Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita confirmed that the production of UD Trucks Isuzu in Thailand will move to Indonesia. According to the plan, the transfer will begin full operation in 2024.
It is known that UD Trucks is currently under the auspices of Isuzu after being taken over from Volvo in 2019. The Minister of Industry emphasized that UD Trucks’ production would be carried out at the Isuzu plant in Karawang, West Java, with an investment value of IDR 29.6 billion.
“IAMI will produce UD Trucks at the Isuzu Karawang Plant and start in 2024. They are not opening new land, but adding a production line up,” said Agus Gumiwang when met at the Ministry of Industry Building, South Jakarta, Friday (9/6).
According to Agus, the Isuzu plant Karawang already has sufficient utilities to produce UD Trucks vehicles. Later, the vehicles produced there will not only meet domestic demand, but also exports.
“So we are indeed pushing for exports of Isuzu vehicles, including for UD Trucks,” he said.
On the same occasion, Agus confirmed, opening a new line for UD Trucks at the Isuzu factory will open 100-150 new jobs. He hoped the number would continue to grow in the future.
“Isuzu has invested a lot in Indonesia since long ago. Initially UD Trucks will produce in Indonesia with a target of 1600 units a year, then every year it will increase,” he explained.
Minister of Industry clarification regarding Isuzu Factory Relocation
Previously, Agus admitted that he had never said that Isuzu wanted to move the entire factory facility from Thailand to Indonesia. He said, the transfer only targeted UD Trucks products.
“I’m just conveying, specifically for UD Trucks products whose production facilities will be moved from Thailand to Indonesia,” he said.
He confirmed that when meeting with Isuzu representatives in Japan, his party did not discuss the possibility of fully moving production facilities from Thailand to Indonesia. They only specifically discuss UD Trucks.
“We have never had discussions with Isuzu in Japan regarding the transfer of production facilities to Indonesia. The ones with UD Trucks are one of those that Isuzu actually produces,” he said.
