Swollen Feet Warning: Symptom Indicates Serious Diseases, Says Medical Expert

Dr. Hossam Mowafi, Professor of Critical Cases at the Faculty of Medicine, Kasr Al-Ainy, warned of a common symptom that some people tolerate, indicating serious diseases.

Muwafi said during his program “My Lord, Increase Me in Knowledge”, broadcast on Sada Al-Balad channel, that the symptom he is referring to is swelling of the foot, explaining that the reason for its swelling varies from one patient to another.

The professor of critical care medicine added: “If the swelling is in one foot, and is accompanied by pain in the calf muscle, this is evidence of a blood clot in the peripheral artery.”

He pointed to the ease of diagnosing a peripheral artery clot and determining its exact size, by conducting duplex x-rays on the swollen foot.

He continued: “While swelling of the feet at the same time may be a warning sign of a problem in important vital organs in the body, which are the kidneys, liver, heart and thyroid gland.”

Muwafi indicated that the swelling of the feet together may be evidence of blockage of the lymphatic vessels, which causes elephantiasis, stressing that its treatment is very difficult.
