In the night from Thursday to Friday, two explosions took place in a shopping center in Arnhem. The night before, suspicious packages were already deposited at two restaurants in the shopping center.
The police received reports of loud bangs at the shopping center on Elderveldplein around 3:45 am. There appeared to have been two explosions.
In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, suspicious packages were already found in the shopping center. Mayor Ahmed Marcouch therefore decided to close the two eateries where the suspicious packages were found – Sofram and Diner 66 – for two weeks.
“For me, the assignment in Arnhem is always to offer residents, shopkeepers and visitors as much safety as possible,” Marcouch said. “Our goal is to restore peace and public order in the neighborhood.” He also said he would revoke the licenses of the two businesses if necessary.
‘The whole flat woke up’
One of the explosions took place at one of the buildings where a suspicious package was already found. The other explosion hit an adjacent building, police say. According to it AD it concerns Diner 66 and a nearby restaurant.
The buildings were severely damaged by the explosion. “The whole flat woke up with a fright,” a shocked local resident told the newspaper.
The police suspect that at least two people were involved in putting down the suspicious packages, but are still investigating. It is not known whether they contain explosives.
Both eateries have previously been the subject of arson several times. Police are investigating whether there is a possible connection between the incidents.
