Comment on the investigations against Trump: Strengthened by the indictment
Trump says he is innocent
Neither the US Department of Justice nor the White House has commented on the case.
– I never thought it would be possible that something like this could happen to a former American president, writes Trump on the night of Friday Norwegian time, and emphasizes how many votes he received in the last presidential election.
– I am an innocent man, he writes further.
Trump is the first US president to be indicted in a criminal case. He is also charged in the so-called hush money case in Manhattan in the state of New York, where he denies criminal guilt. Take a quick look at the matter here:
This is what the case is about
The document case concerns, among other things, how Trump handled classified documents after he was done as president:
- Trump is being investigated by federal authorities for the handling of classified documents after he left the White House, and for alleged attempts to cling to presidential power after his defeat in the 2020 election.
- In August 2022, FBI agents entered Trump’s residence Mar-a-Lago in Florida and found around 13,000 documents. Around 100 of these were marked as secret, although Trump’s lawyers had previously said that all classified documents had been handed over to US authorities.
The investigation is led by Special Investigator Jack Smith.
Despite several ongoing investigations, Trump is the clear favorite to win the battle to become the Republican candidate in the next presidential election in 2024. He is fighting, among other things, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his former Vice President Mike Pence.
In connection with the hush money case, US experts told VG that indictments such as this are not at all certain, which is bad news for Trump.
