Is there a definitive treatment for osteoporosis?

There is no cure for osteoporosis, but treatment can help slow or stop the loss of bone density, and reduce the risk of fractures. This may include medications, diet changes, exercise, and tips to reduce the chances of fractures.

According to the National Institutes of Health, once a person’s bone density has decreased, there is no cure, but the treatment is to protect the bones from deterioration as much as possible.

The condition develops when a person begins to lose bone density faster than bone tissue grows, leading to osteoporosis. Once this process begins, it may not be possible to regrow all of the lost bone.

All people lose bone density over time, which is why restoring bone density in old age is challenging because bone loss already occurs as part of the aging process.

However, if the person is younger or has had osteoporosis for a shorter period of time, partial recovery may be possible. Bones can grow again, allowing the person to approach peak normal bone density. This reduces the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life, but This happens in a few cases.

What does osteoporosis treatment do?

Natural and medical treatments can slow or stop bone loss due to osteoporosis. This is important to prevent fractures, which can lead to chronic pain and difficulty moving if the bones do not heal back together properly.

Therefore, changes must be made in the diet and lifestyle, which are as follows:

Diet

Changes in the routine and foods a person eats can be an important part of treating osteoporosis.

The diet can support bone health, improve muscle strength, and help a person maintain a healthy weight, all of which are beneficial for people with osteoporosis, and are:

Get enough protein.

Get enough calcium from foods such as dairy products, leafy green vegetables, and fortified cereals.

Eat enough calories for a person’s weight, height, and activity level.

Vitamin D

Safe sun exposure can help people get enough vitamin D, which in turn helps the body absorb calcium.

There are some food sources that contain vitamin D, such as oily fish, but it is difficult to get enough from food alone, so exposure to sunlight helps to get enough vitamin D.

Sports

Weight-bearing exercises help improve bone density in young people. In older people, it can strengthen muscles, help with movement, and reduce the risk of fractures. Walking and running are also suitable exercises.
