The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits last week rose to the highest level since October 2021.
The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits rose sharply last week, indicating a slowdown in the labor market and rising recession risks.
According to the networkabc newsToday, Thursday, the Ministry of Labor announced that first-time applications for state unemployment benefits increased by 28,000, to a level of 261,000 in the week ending June 3.
Economists polled by Reuters had expected 235,000 applications to be submitted in the latest week.
The government also said last week that the national economy added 339,000 jobs in May, after the unemployment rate rose to a seven-month high of 3.7% from 3.4% in April.
The markets are awaiting the US Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for next week, amid expectations that the central bank will refrain from raising interest rates this month.
