Norway has sold 32 F-16 aircraft to Romania for 388 million euros, 4.5 billion kroner.
– We are now implementing the agreement we entered into with Romania in November last year regarding the sale of Norwegian F-16s to the Romanian armed forces. The sale has now been approved by both the Norwegian and American authorities, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp).
Before the aircraft are handed over to Romania, all aircraft must undergo maintenance. Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services (KAMS) has been awarded this contract for a value of well over NOK 700 million.
– This will be Norway’s largest disposal agreement for military equipment ever. Norway’s F-16 fighters have been among the best maintained in the world and have a consistently high technical standard, says Gram.
Defense material has also entered into a contract for up to twelve F-16s to the American company Draken International. These planes will be used in training against American fighter planes. This sale has not yet been approved by the Norwegian or American authorities.
Norway decided to buy the F-16 in 1975. The first of a total of 76 aircraft arrived in Norway in 1980.
