ProRail has now identified the cause of the malfunction that shut down train traffic around Amsterdam on Sunday. The employees of the air traffic control post who had fled to Utrecht due to the emergency plan can return. But as a result, trains will again be unable to run around the capital on the night from Friday to Saturday.
According to ProRail, a defective hardware component was the culprit. That part has been replaced. “The system has been extensively tested over the past two days and is working again.”
The outage occurred late Sunday afternoon. The problem seemed to be resolved around 6 p.m., but train traffic was halted again later in the evening. Hundreds of travelers were stranded as a result.
Because ProRail could not immediately determine the cause of the problem, the employees of the traffic control center diverted to Utrecht. They go back in the night from Friday to Saturday. “During this move, the systems in Amsterdam will be activated and the staff will also be brought from Utrecht to Amsterdam. Because the systems are down, no train traffic will be possible around Amsterdam.”
The trains are not expected to run between midnight and early morning. Travelers are advised to arrange alternative transport or not to travel within the Amsterdam region. Goods traffic will also be affected by the move.
