Amazon uses AI to detect damaged items and improve fulfillment center efficiency

Amazon is equipping fulfillment centers with AI to detect damaged items during the picking and packing process. The aim is to reduce the amount of damaged goods in the fulfillment centers and to speed up deliveries.

Amazon relies on AI to sort out damaged goods: According to a report by The Wall Streets Journal, the company has implemented the system in two fulfillment centers so far and plans to roll it out in ten other locations in North America and Europe

Employees in Amazon’s warehouses have traditionally had to inspect goods for signs of wear and tear as they pick, pack and stow goods while meeting the company’s targets for the number of orders processed per hour – a time-consuming endeavour.

Amazon trained the AI using photos of undamaged and damaged items so the technology can tell the difference. If something is broken, an employee checks the goods afterwards. The project is part of Amazon’s push to bring more AI technology into logistics operations to better organize complicated supply chains while transporting goods quickly and reliably.
