Bloober Team’s Layers of Fear is getting a remake soon, due out in a few days. The game stands out for its use of the Unreal Engine 5, being the first game from a third party to be released on the new version of the Epic Games engine.
In a conversation with WCCFTech, programmer Krzysztof Kansi and technical artist Michal Gavron talked about using Unreal Engine 5. They said that working on the new version was extremely enjoyable, despite the difficulties associated with being one of the first to use new technologies.
Working with Unreal Engine 5 is fast and very enjoyable. In terms of speed, Lumen is a big improvement. Thanks to him, we see all the effects at once, without having to “bake” the light for several hours.
Using new technology is always an exciting challenge. In our previous collaboration with Anshar Studios and the Bloober Team on Observer: System Redux, we were among the first games for a new generation of consoles, so this is not the first time we have faced this challenge.
And as in the past similar cases of working with new technologies, we have a lot to learn, a lot to plan and debug in the process. And, as always, there are moments that went surprisingly well, and obstacles that we did not expect. However, the overall experience was very pleasant and we are pleased with the result.
Layers of Fear currently uses Unreal Engine version 5.1, but the studio does not exclude the possibility of switching to version 5.2. However, they are still exploring the possibility of a transition before making any announcements.
The game will use Lumen technologies to create more realistic light and shadows, allowing for dynamic lighting that reacts to events in the game. Another new technology in Unreal Engine 5 is Nanite, but it will not be used in Layers of Fear, since, according to the studio, it serves to facilitate open world rendering and is not needed for a linear game like Layers of Fear.
Layers of Fear will release on June 15, 2023 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. The game will be a remake of the first two games in one package and will also include an unreleased campaign.
