Former NATO Secretary General Proposes Direct Involvement in Ukraine Conflict

NATO troops can take a direct part in the conflict in Ukraine, said former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in conversation with Guardian. Earlier, the current head of the organization, Jens Stoltenberg, said that the issue of Ukraine’s security will come first at the summit in Vilnius, but full guarantees are provided only to full members of the bloc.

“A group of NATO countries may want to send troops to Ukraine if member states, including the United States, do not provide Kyiv with real security guarantees at the alliance’s summit in Vilnius,” Rasmussen suggested.

He also added that if Ukraine “doesn’t get anything in Vilnius,” then the Baltic countries and Poland could assemble a “coalition of the willing” to send troops to help Kyiv.

In September last year, Kyiv applied to join the military bloc in an expedited manner. As the Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security later noted Jake Sullivancarrying out such a procedure is untimely.

At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba pointed out that Kyiv would not be satisfied with any other decision of the bloc’s summit in Vilnius, scheduled for July 11-12, except for an invitation to join it.

As the Kremlin spokesman emphasized Dmitry PeskovMoscow is closely watching the situation and remembers that it was the orientation of the neighboring republic towards joining the North Atlantic Alliance that became one of the reasons for the start of the special operation.
