Due to a fire in a more than 15 kilometer long tunnel in Tyrol, the Austrian emergency services have evacuated about 370 train passengers from the tunnel. At least 50 people were slightly injured. The train was on its way to Amsterdam and Hamburg.
The fire has since been extinguished, the fire service said. NS considers it likely that Dutch people were also on board, but cannot say for sure.
The train is stopped in the Terfner tunnel. The occupants were rescued by firefighters. The evacuation was hampered by smoke from a train set of cars that had caught fire. People could only be accompanied with masks on.
They were sheltered in tents until they could be led away by buses. NS announces that passengers have been taken to hotels in Innsbruck. According to a spokesperson, the Nightjet trains from Zurich and Vienna can still run to Amsterdam, but the next train from Amsterdam to Innsbruck has been cancelled.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a damaged overhead line. The tunnel is ventilated.
