Casper Ruud Defeats Holger Rune in Nordic Derby to Reach Roland Garros Semifinals Again

Him again, like twelve months ago. Casper Ruud wins the semifinal of Roland Garros and does it against Holger Rune, just like last year. The Norwegian eliminates the Dane in the Nordic derby with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, in two hours and 44 minutes of play. The match was quite disappointing in the first two sets, with Rune completely flat (maybe a little tired?) and Ruud in total control, thanks to his impeccable serve and big safety straight. Then, in the third set, there was the resurrection of the youngster born in 2003, but in the fourth the native of Oslo returned to command, finishing in less than three hours. As always, the class of 1998 didn’t steal the eye with aesthetics, but it didn’t help him to pay attention to that feature of the game: 72% of points won with the first, 59% with the second, five overall breaks and only 29 unforced errors, in front of his opponent’s 47. For Ruud this is the third slam semifinal, the second in a row in Paris, where he reached the final last year. He will face Alexander Zverev, in a rather important match also for the purposes of the standings: Christian’s son could return to fourth place, while the German would gain six positions falling behind Lorenzo Musetti (17).

Ruud marathon runner! Deep run and perfect recovery, Rune KO

Roland Garros

The Nordic derby speaks Norwegian: Ruud beats Rune, the match in 3′

The record

The beginning of the game is very intense, with Rune immediately getting two break points. The Dane is fresh from the last previous win in Rome, so he wants to steer the match in the right direction. However, Ruud didn’t make it to the quarterfinals to be an extra, and cancels the break points with confidence. In the next game, the first real test for the child prodigy under Mouratoglou’s wing, the set takes its definitive direction. Rune commits two double faults and shoots two straight shots in the corridor: it’s a break Ruud! From then on, it’s all downhill for the Norwegian: Rune overtakes 25 overall errors and Ruud takes the first set in 27 minutes: 6-1.

Still stunned by the performance of the first set, Rune starts the second in the worst way: he loses his serve and launches another escape from Ruud. The Norwegian serves very well, is concentrated, makes the difference with his forehand and is rocky in defence. Rune tries to shake himself off, tries to make sense of his being on the pitch, but another tombstone arrives in the fifth game: the second break. At that point, at 5-2, Ruud returns to service and connects positively at the third set point, going up 2-0 in one hour and six minutes.

The emblem of the match: Ruud pushes Rune back and then eats him at the net

At the beginning of the third set, what you don’t expect happens: Ruud becomes stiffer than ever, while Rune breaks free, forgetting in the blink of an eye the many mistakes of the first hour. The Norwegian knows that he can close, but the Dane rises from his own ashes, rediscovering depth and security. The break of the second game is nothing more than the logical consequence of the events: the class of 2003 puts the arrow and never looks back, confirming each round of service and closing with a score of 6-3 in 41 minutes.

In the fourth set the games fought are all the prerogative of the Norwegian who, on the woolen edge, is more lucid. This explains the break in the fourth game and the annulment of the two counter-break balls in the fifth. Rune clings tooth and nail to the confrontation, saving two match balls in his turn to serve, but then has to give way in the ninth game in two hours 44 minutes of play.
