It was expected that Francis would spend several days in the hospital after the operation.
The 86-year-old pope, who underwent colon surgery in 2021, suffered from a hernia that causes recurring, painful and worsening symptoms.
On Tuesday, Francis underwent tests at the hospital, but on Wednesday he conducted his usual weekly audience before going to the hospital.
