Police Chief Threatens to Remove Staff Who Fail to Address Human Trafficking Cases

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPolice chief General Sigit Listyo Prabowo has threatened to remove his position and take legal action against his staff who are unable to uncover criminal cases human trafficking (TPPO) in its jurisdiction.

This was conveyed by Sigit inside video conference (vicon) with officials from the National Police Headquarters and the Regional Police Chiefs at the Puldasis of the Main Building of the National Police Headquarters, South Jakarta, June 5 2023.

In this activity, the National Police Chief gave directions regarding the handling of TIP which was a serious concern from President Joko Widodo or Jokowi.

Police officers who are unable to uncover TIP cases in their area will face serious consequences. They will be prosecuted and removed from their positions as a form of responsibility for handling this crime,” said Sigit, in his official statement, Monday, June 5, 2023.

Contacted separately, the Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, said that the orders from the National Police Chief to the central and regional TIP Task Forces were clear. He said the National Police Chief ordered his ranks to map and take action against TIP throughout Indonesia. The performance of the task force will also be evaluated every week. In addition, the TIP Task Force will take action against those who also support this crime.

National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo officially formed a Task Force (Satgas) for Handling the Crime of Trafficking in Persons (TPPO). This is a follow-up to President Joko Widodo’s directives (Jokowi).

The Indonesian National Police Chief appointed the Deputy Head of the Criminal Investigation Agency (Wakabareskrim) of the National Police Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri as Chair of the TIP Task Force. Then, Deputy Head of the TIP Task Force is carried out by the Head of the Binmas Corps of the National Police’s Security Maintenance Agency (Baharkam), Inspector General Hary Sudwijanto.

The National Police Chief also assigned the Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police to monitor the media regarding developments in the TIP case. This, said the National Police Chief Sigit, aims to provide transparency and maintain accurate information regarding the handling of TIP to the public.
