Sergei Rebrov Appointed as New Coach of Ukraine National Football Team

Former international striker Sergei Rebrov has been appointed coach of the Ukraine national football team, according to what the local football federation announced today. “This is a new stage in the history of Ukrainian football. A special moment, when the good page will be written under martial law, in a special period for our country,” said Federation President Andriy Pavelko, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine since February 24, 2022.

Rebrov, who led the Emirati Al Ain team in the previous period, will replace Ruslan Rotan in a contract that extends until July 30, 2026, after the end of the World Cup scheduled for the United States, Canada and Mexico. He will immediately enter the fray of competition, as Ukraine will play three matches this June, a friendly against Germany (12), and two matches in the European Cup 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia (16) and Malta (19). Rebrov formed a terrible duo with Andriy Shevchenko in the Ukrainian national team attack in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Rebrov, who is now 49 years old and has 75 international matches, played most of his career with Dynamo Kiev (1992-2000), before moving to the English Premier League, where he carried the colors of Tottenham, who loaned him to Turkish Fenerbahçe, and West Ham, before ending his career with Russian Rubin Kazan. He coached Dynamo Kiev in 2014 and led him to the league title twice, then coached Al-Ahly of Sweden, Hungarian Ferencváros and Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates, who led him to the league titles and the League Cup last season 2021-2022.
