Mayor Adams Refuses to Disband Controversial Neighborhood Safety Teams Despite Civil Rights Violations

Mayor Adams rejects calls to disband the police department’s neighborhood safety teams.

This follows a report by a court-appointed federal monitor that revealed the units are continuing practices that violate the civil rights of New Yorkers.

The report shows that nearly all of the pat-downs by “Neighborhood Safety Teams” involved African-Americans or Hispanics.

Adams stood by his decision to relaunch the controversial unit in March 2022.

The mayor commented that the report should have also cited the removal of almost 10,000 illegal weapons from the streets. He added that what matters is public safety and justice and that both objectives can be worked on.

The report requires the department to submit an improvement plan within a month.
