The Attractiveness of Introducing the Euro in Sweden: Increased Support Amidst Depreciating Krona and Inflation

The idea of introducing the euro is becoming increasingly attractive to the Swedish population. With the Swedish krona depreciating due to inflation, support for the common currency is stronger than ever.

Figures from the Swedish statistics agency SCB show that more than 30 percent of Swedes would be in favor of the introduction of the euro if it were voted on now. Half of the population remains against abolishing the crown.

The fall in the value of the Swedish krona has made it more expensive to import goods. Sweden’s central bank’s efforts to curb inflation have been thwarted in part by high import prices.

One of the advantages for countries in the Eurozone is that it is easier and cheaper to import goods. The introduction of the euro would therefore make it easier to bring inflation down in Sweden.

Sweden joined the European Union in 1995, but never adopted the euro. In 2003, the country held a referendum on joining the eurozone, but then 56 percent of the population voted against. Until now, the population has never been very positive about a common currency.
