JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon told a private banquet Tuesday for moderate House members that Congress should eliminate the debt ceiling, a person familiar with the matter told CNN.
“Get off the debt ceiling,” the source said, telling lawmakers at a meeting with the New Democratic Coalition.
The meeting comes just days after Congress passed a last-minute settlement to raise the debt ceiling.
Dimon called the debt ceiling a “disaster” and urged lawmakers to fix it to prevent future crises, the source told CNN.
New Democratic Coalition Chair Annie Koster said in a statement on Tuesday that the New Democrats “look forward to providing practical solutions to policy issues.”
A JPMorgan spokesperson did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
The New Democratic Coalition, made up of about 100 members of the US House of Representatives, describes itself as a center-left group committed to economic growth, innovation and fiscally responsible politics.
“It’s great that we didn’t have a debt ceiling crisis,” Dimon told reporters after lunch, praising members of Congress from both parties.
Dimon expressed optimism about the state of the US economy globally despite concerns about the rise of China, according to the source.
“America is in very good shape, and our economy is the most prosperous in the world ever,” he added.
