According to the Washington Post, leaked US intelligence reports indicate that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards intend to use their proxy militias to attack the US military in Syria.
The intelligence also indicates (reliably, given Russia’s past history) that Moscow and Tehran are cooperating to drive the US out of Syria.
The Iranian threat is said to center on so-called armour-piercing bombs that effectively turn armored vehicles into deadly fire traps for the soldiers inside.
Iranian Revolutionary Guards used these bombs to kill hundreds of American soldiers in Iraq and injure hundreds more.
The IRGC unit responsible for the use of these bombs is the same unit that oversaw the attacks on US forces in Iraq.
This is the secret foreign operations unit of the Revolutionary Guards, called the Al-Quds Force.
The Quds Force has overseen several assassination plots against former Trump administration officials such as former national security adviser John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Unfortunately, the Biden administration has done little to dissuade Iran from implementing these and other plans.
All this must change
A senior Biden administration official, preferably the president himself, should make it very clear that any lethal attack on US military forces in Syria will result in a direct military response against IRGC targets inside Iran. .
The purpose of this threat would not be to provoke a larger war, but to restore a measure of deterrence.
From his blood-drenched ideological standpoint, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has had a particular thirst for American blood since the murder of former commander Qassem Soleimani in January 2020.
But Khamenei and the IRGC are ultimately rational and will continue to press for as long as they can before getting hurt.
If an IRGC headquarters or major training facility and associated personnel are destroyed after an attack on US targets, Khamenei and the IRGC will reconsider conducting future attacks.
Biden is right to want to maintain a US military presence in Syria, and as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, he must also be prepared to protect the lives of those under his command.
