The Director of INFP, Constantin Ionescu, stated, on Digi24’s Jurnalul de Seară, that the 5.2 Richter earthquake in Arad had an intensity of 7 degrees Mercali at the epicenter and was felt with an intensity of 6 in the Arad area. According to him, such intensities can cause material damage, but not significant.

“The intensity of the earthquake in the epicenter was 7 degrees Mercali, it was felt in the Arad area with an intensity of 6, which may cause damage or some cracks in the walls or the fall of chimneys, but not significant damage.
Can damage buildings that have not been maintained or are in a state of disrepair.
The earthquake was also felt in Hungary. As I see, in Cluj-Napoca it was felt with an intensity of 4, in Oradea as well. It was also felt in Timisoara with an intensity of 5-6. So the earthquake was quite strong in terms of effects and intensity”, said Ionescu.
Asked why in Arad the earthquake felt as if it had 6 degrees, Ionescu explained that it is about the intensity of the earthquake and not the magnitude:
“6 is the intensity. The intensity shows the effects of the earthquake, because in the epicenter it was 7 – the intensity on Mercali. The magnitude represents the energy released at the epicenter and it does not change as the intensity changes. The intensity decreases as you move away from the epicenter,” explained the INFP director.
“Aftershocks may occur”
“This earthquake can also destabilize other faults in the Banat area because the entire area from the Crișana area to Sebia is fragmented by small faults and faults that can produce earthquakes of magnitude 5 or lower, or more than 6 as was the ’92 earthquake. (…) The earthquake now is to the north of the one on 22.05, of 4.4.
Replicas may occur. Aftershocks are certainly occurring, now we don’t know exactly how strong they will be, but this type of earthquake, and especially earthquakes of this magnitude, produce aftershocks.
My colleagues are now working on finalizing the parameters of this earthquake and after that they will be working on locating the aftershocks and then we will see what their numbers are and continue to inventory.
Replicas are generally smaller. We don’t know exactly what the action is in that area right now. In Târgu Jiu there were over a thousand (ed. – aftershocks), here, compared to the 4.7 earthquake, the first in the Arad area, there were around 20 aftershocks. We do not expect what happened in the area of Târgu Jiului.
The aftershocks, like that, compared to the old earthquakes, were not as many as in Târgu Jiu or in the Galați area,” the INFP director also told Digi24.
