5 Types of Foods That Cause Diabetes: A Guide to Managing Your Diet

Here are some types of foods that cause diabetes.

1. Refined carbohydrates

When the source of carbohydrates is processed, the vitamins and minerals in it will certainly be lost. Calories without nutrients coupled with high sugar content are the main culprits in causing diabetes. As much as possible, you need to avoid this type of food.

The easy-to-digest nature of refined carbohydrates means that these foods can cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Over time, this condition will lead to type 2 diabetes.

In the Archives of Internal Medicine published in the JAMA Network, it is stated that a diet high in refined carbohydrates increases the risk of type-2 diabetes by 21 percent.

To reduce that risk, that means you need to limit your intake of refined carbohydrate foods such as bread, crackers and pasta.

2. Sweet drinks

Just like carbohydrates, sweetened drinks have a high glycemic index and can increase a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

5. Alcohol

Studies have shown that excessive alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

In a study by Diabetes Care, excessive alcohol consumption was described as 50 grams of alcohol for women and 60 grams of alcohol for men per day.
