The President of Slovenia, Natasa Pirc Musar, stated that the Slovenian candidacy has convinced thanks to its priorities, among which she cited respect for international law, the peaceful settlement of disputes, gender equality and the protection of vulnerable groups and the climate and environmental protection.
Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob called Slovenia’s election one of the country’s greatest successes in international diplomacy.
He said that his country will act as a uniting element between different interests, in favor of international peace and security, and stressed the need to place the issue of climate change among the priorities of the UN.
The Slovenian bid received 153 votes, far exceeding the required two-thirds majority in the General Assembly, while the Belarusian bid received just 38.
Belarus supports Russia in the invasion launched against Ukraine last year.
Slovenia, a member of the European Union and NATO, will thus occupy the place for the countries of Eastern Europe that Albania will leave vacant at the end of this year in the highest decision-making body of the United Nations. EFE
