The government today decided to contribute €2 million to NATO’s Comprehensive Support Package for Ukraine this year and approved matching contributions over the next two years.
The NATO Comprehensive Support Package was created in 2016 to provide centralized non-lethal support in strengthening the resilience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to promote the defense reform process and Ukraine’s approach to NATO standards.
In response to Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the leaders of NATO countries and governments at the 2022 NATO summit in Madrid agreed on the need to significantly expand the non-lethal support provided by NATO, adapting it to the conditions of active warfare.
The decision adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers provides that Latvia will make annual national grant contributions to the Comprehensive Support Package in the amount of 2 million euros over a three-year period from 2023 to 2025.
Taking into account the acute needs of the Ukrainian armed forces in resisting Russian aggression, ensuring sufficient funding for the Comprehensive Support Package is one of the priorities of the NATO Heads of State and Government Summit in Vilnius in July.
NATO allies have so far provided Ukraine with unprecedented support and are determined to maintain it as long as it will be necessary, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Latvia’s military support to Ukraine, including the last package of military support to Ukraine, which consisted of anti-aircraft defense systems “Stinger”, has exceeded 1% of the country’s gross domestic product.
