UN Criticized for Celebrating Russian Language Day Amid Controversial Dam Explosion

“Tuesday is Russian Language Day,” the UN Twitter account said, linking to the organization’s profile in Russian. “The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people live in peace and prosperity. Learn more about the plan for a better and more sustainable future for all,” urges the UN post written in Russian.

At the same time, the tweet about protecting the planet appeared after the explosion of the Kachovská Dam endangered the lives of thousands of civilians and animals. “The scale of the ecological disaster would be far beyond the borders of Ukraine and would affect the entire Black Sea region,” Ukrainian military intelligence warned last November of the destruction of the giant dam.

“The Russian commanders gave the order to detonate the Kachovská Dam in Russian. What a day at the United Nations to celebrate the Russian language!” he criticized, according to the website Kiyv Independent contribution of Ukrainian diplomacy spokesman Oleh Nikolenko.

Incredulous reactions

Virtually all the reactions under the mentioned UN post are indignant and disbelieving. “You can’t be serious about this”, “Damn clowns”, “Disgusting”, write some users with Ukrainian names, but most are in a significantly more vulgar spirit.

However, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) criticized the destruction of the Kachovská Dam. “The destruction of the Kachovská Dam puts thousands of civilians at risk, leaving many homeless and in dire humanitarian need. Civilians and civilian infrastructure cannot be targeted,” reads the post, which was later shared by the UN’s Twitter account.

The Russians are happy that the evacuation of settlements after the destruction of the dam will facilitate the progress: We are sensitive to the protection of civilians
