Effective Gumboro Prevention with HIPRA’s Immune Complex Vaccine

HIPRA has been very active in the field of Gumboro prevention since the start of production of poultry vaccines. An intermediate or weak vaccine strain was already introduced in 1983. However, in the 1990s, the highly virulent strains of Gumboro appeared. At the time, HIPRA was the first company to register a vaccine claiming to be effective against the highly virulent strains of Gumboro. An excellent “strong” or intermediate plus drinking water vaccine that is still often used today when the disease pressure is high.

Because the presence of antibodies against Gumboro disease in day-old chicks makes it difficult to determine the correct time of administration of a drinking water vaccine, a new immune complex vaccine was developed. This vaccine is only released into the chick once the antibodies have disappeared sufficiently and the vaccine can occupy the places where the field virus would normally settle. The vaccine can be administered in-ovo at the hatchery or by injection on day one.

Protection against the new Gumboro variant UK2019 (also called 98.1% DV86)
With the arrival of the new variant, it is often shown that couples that perform less well are not sufficiently protected against the Gumboro UK2019 virus. In the farms that were followed, some flocks were not vaccinated, vaccinated with a vector vaccine or with a weak drinking water vaccine. Flocks vaccinated with a strong vaccine or with an immune complex vaccine were best protected against the new variant.

At various farms where a variant or abnormal result was seen, in-ovo vaccination with the immune complex vaccine GUMBOHATCH® has been started. The flocks were followed intensively after vaccination and compared with a previous flock in which abnormal variant strains were observed. The results of the first 11 flocks vaccinated with this vaccine showed a great improvement in technical results. Only vaccine virus has been found in these flocks using PCR.

The above research results show that the use of the immune complex vaccine is a very good investment and pays for itself with an improvement in the production number of an average of 15 points. Especially in the case of the variant strains of Gumboro, such as the UK2019. Users of this immune complex vaccine also confirmed that after the vaccination they finally turned good rounds again with a more predictable result. And that gives peace in the stable!
