In December he played against Neymar and Co. at the World Cup, now he is in prison. Jürgen Klinsmann and Andreas Herzog continue to rely on Son Jun-ho.
South Korea team boss Jürgen Klinsmann has called up professional Son Jun-ho for the national team despite allegations of bribery against the 31-year-old.
The 2022 World Cup contender was arrested in China’s Liaoning province in May but is now part of Klinsmann’s and his Austrian assistant Andreas Herzog’s squad for the internationals on June 16 against Peru and four days later against El Salvador.
Justice thriller about team players
“We are all shocked by Jun-Ho’s situation, he has our full support,” Klinsmann said of Chinese club Shandong Taishan’s midfielder. “We hope every day that something changes, but that is not in our hands.” The South Korean association has so far tried in vain to release the national player.
Little is known about the allegations against him. According to Chinese sources, he was arrested “on suspicion of accepting bribes from non-state employees”. “We don’t know how he’s doing mentally and physically,” said Klinsmann.
Son featured in three of South Korea’s four games at the World Cup in Qatar. Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min has also been nominated by Klinsmann.
