Het is inmiddels veertig jaar geleden dat Huisman voor het eerst op televisie te zien was. Zijn debuut maakt hij met De KRO zomeravondshow. Later presenteert hij verschillende succesvolle programma’s, waaronder de Soundmixshow, Mini-playbackshow en Surpriseshow.
Na het einde van De Soundmixshow in 2002 wordt het langzaam stiller rond de presentator. Hij blijft actief op televisie, maar het gigantische succes uit de jaren negentig wordt niet geëvenaard.
In 2016 vertelt Huisman in gesprek met De Telegraaf dat hij niet langer de drang heeft om per se op televisie te komen. “Ik zeg lang niet altijd ja. Ik wil bijvoorbeeld niet van een duikplank springen of door de modder kruipen.”
‘Het blijft oorverdovend stil’
Toch is de presentator verbaasd dat omroepen niet in de rij staan om met hem te werken. “Niet om mezelf op de borst te kloppen, maar ik bedacht de Mini Playbackshow en de Soundmixshow, en daar is nationaal en internationaal toch aardig mee gescoord”, aldus de presentator een jaar later in een interview met Nieuwe Revu.
“Je zou als zender kunnen denken: laten we gewoon eens kijken wat die man heeft liggen. Wie weet zit er een juweeltje tussen. Maar het blijft oorverdovend stil.”
Hij vindt het lastig om te bepalen wanneer het tijd is om te stoppen met werken. “Ik heb ook nooit gewerkt; ik heb altijd mijn hobby gedaan. En wanneer stop je nou met je hobby?”
In 2019 heeft Huisman zijn televisiedroom laten varen, vertelt hij aan Veronica Magazine. “Ik woon lekker tussen de boeren. Mijn ene buur heeft koeien, de andere teelt bloembollen. Dat houdt me nuchter. Ik vind het wel gezegend zo.”

Less than a week later, it turns out that Huisman still cannot leave television behind and he announces his new SBS6 program Where is that party?! On. Huisman attends special celebrations and parties. The program attracts an average of 420,000 viewers per episode, which the presenter is not dissatisfied with.
The television maker enjoys his new role and blames people’s criticism of him and the program on their “in many cases terrible job”. “If you have been selling raincoats on the market for years, then I understand that you think this way. If you are in my shoes, you would prefer to continue as long as possible.”
Later that year he can be seen in A program about the nineties. With this VPRO program he returns to broadcasting where he made his television debut in 1975 with his band Lucifer. His role in the program is limited. He is literally taken out of the fridge at the beginning of each episode to talk about the nineties, while presenter Marijn Frank interviews guests.
‘Ambitious is a strange word in the Netherlands’
In 2021, Huisman will tell NU.nl that he wants to make a sequel Where is that party?! The presenter thinks that with the relaxation of the corona measures there is room for a new season.
People sometimes react jokingly when Huisman lets slip that he still wants to make television. “Ambitious is considered a strange word in the Netherlands, you cannot say that you like something very much,” he says. “If you say: I don’t want anymore, then they only ask you, it seems. Sometimes I have the wrong image. People think I’m sitting on the couch at home. That’s absolutely not the case.”
From this fall, Huisman will travel in the new season of Better late than never around the world with three friends. He succeeds Barrie Stevens, Gerard Cox, Peter Faber and – who passed away last year – Willibrord Frequin, who previously appeared in the same program.
The presenter is happy with the new adventure. “Three times is a charm, because they had asked me before. They just waited until I was old enough, because five years ago I thought I was still too young, haha. I’m looking forward to traveling in a program that works so well because of the inconvenience.”
