Apple releases a new version of its Mac Pro. This resembles the current Mac Pro with Intel chips from 2019, but this time it gets an Apple Silicon soc. The new workstation will be released next week from 8400 euros.
Apple provides the device of a new M2 Ultra-soc, which combines two M2 Max chips through an UltraFusion interconnect. This gives the device a CPU with 24 cores and a GPU with a maximum of 76 cores. In addition, the Mac Pro can be supplied with a maximum of 192GB of memory. The soc also gets a media engine that, according to Apple, can handle up to 22 simultaneous 8k streams. Apple claims that the chip is twenty percent faster than the current M1 Ultra.
The design of the Mac Pro appears unchanged. The desktop again gets a metal frame with holes for airflow. The device will once again be available in tower format and as a rackmount case. The Mac Pro can also be opened and fitted with expansion cards. For that, the device has six PCIe 4.0 slots. For example, Apple lists expansion cards with extra network ports and cards with SDI connections for professional cameras.
The Mac Pro also has two HDMI connections and two RJ45 connections for 10Gbit/s Ethernet. In addition, the device will have eight Thunderbolt 4 ports, supporting up to six Pro Display XDR monitors. The desktop also gets three USB-A ports, a 3.5mm jack and support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
Mac Pro was the only Mac series that did not yet have an Apple-designed Arm chip. All other Mac models had already been upgraded with an Apple Silicon chip since Apple announced the switch to Arm in 2020.
