Get Your Free HPV Vaccination Now to Prevent Cancer

This campaign by the RIVM and the GGD is aimed at urging young people aged 19 to 27 who want the HPV vaccination to take action now. Because HPV vaccination is only free for them during the catch-up campaign in 2023. Because there must be at least five months between the two injections required, it is urgent. A first HPV shot before the summer is necessary to be able to get the second one for free this year as well.

As easy as possible

The turnout of the catch-up campaign is now approaching 20%. Research shows that a large proportion of young adults who have not yet been vaccinated intend to get the shot, but have not yet got around to it. “With the injection bus and also eleven other injection locations spread across the Hollands Midden region, we make getting an HPV vaccination as easy as possible,” says Margreet Bekedam, vaccination manager at Hecht GGD Hollands Midden. “There is always a vaccination location close to home, work or education. Getting an HPV shot takes about ten minutes, depending on how busy it is, of course.”

About HPV and the vaccination

HPV is highly contagious; eight out of ten people become infected with HPV unnoticed through intimate contact in their lifetime. The virus can cause cancer of the mouth and throat, genitals and cervix later in life. HPV vaccination protects against these six types of cancer, including those who are already sexually active. The effectiveness of the HPV vaccine is continuously studied, no permanent side effects have been found.
