The Israeli public broadcaster, Kan, reported today, Monday, that Israel is still holding the body of the Egyptian policeman who killed 3 Israeli soldiers at dawn on Saturday near the Al-Awja crossing on the border between Egypt and Israel.
The authority said that the Israeli authorities are preparing to hand over the body to the Egyptian authorities in the coming days.
Yesterday, Israeli media published the results of a preliminary investigation by the Israeli army into the attack, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials in his government described as dangerous.
The first results of the investigation showed that the Egyptian policeman, whose identity has not yet been revealed, planned every step in advance and knew the area well, including the observation site where two of the three soldiers were killed, by virtue of his work as a border guard.
The investigation also concluded that the perpetrator of the operation walked 5 kilometers at night from his location in Egyptian territory and penetrated about a kilometer and a half into Israeli territory before killing the two soldiers (a male and female soldier) at dawn, then clashed at noon on the same day with an Israeli force and killed a third soldier before he was killed.
According to the Israeli media, the Egyptian policeman was carrying an old Kalashnikov rifle, 6 magazines of ammunition, knives and a Koran.
Meanwhile, the Israeli minister, Yisrael Katz, a member of the security cabinet, called on Egypt to investigate and assume its responsibilities for the attack.
Katz said in an interview with the Israeli radio this morning that Israel is conducting in-depth investigations to find out the negligence and failure on the part of its forces in this case.
Prior to that, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Cairo to conduct a comprehensive and detailed joint investigation. The Israeli mini-ministerial security staff met last night to discuss the Al-Awja crossing operation.
