Odisha Train Accident: Investigation Update and CBI Probe Recommended

New Delhi: Indications are that the reason behind the Odisha train accident that rocked the country will be clear soon. The big clue is the words spoken by the loco pilot just before the accident. “The signal was green,” said Gunanidhi Mohanty, a loco pilot. Gunanidhi, who was seriously injured in the accident, survived the accident. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the words of the loco pilot have become a big help in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Railway Board has recommended a CBI probe as the suspicion of sabotage behind the train tragedy is strong. The CBI team will reach Balasore as soon as the central government’s permission is given. It is suspected that either the electronic interlocking system, which ensures that trains pass safely on fixed tracks, or the point machine, which connects the tracks as needed to divert the train’s course, has been tampered with. The Railways had clarified that the cause of the accident was not the fault of the loco pilot or technical fault in the signaling system.

The Railway Safety Commissioner’s preliminary inquiry found that the green signal given to the Coromandel Express to go through the main line was later withdrawn and the train, which was traveling at a speed of 128 kmph, suddenly turned into the loop line and hit the goods.

Ashwini Vaishnav had said yesterday that the root cause of the accident has been found and the culprits have been identified. Considering all this, there is a possibility of coup d’état, Railway Board C. B. An inquiry is considered recommended.

The preliminary report does not say why the green signal was given and withdrawn, or whether the train was green or red when it crossed the signal. It will require a detailed investigation. The Railway Board hopes that the statement of the loco pilot will be decisive. 275 people lost their lives in the accident. 1170 people have been injured.
