Record-breaking Month: Solar Panels Outperform Biomass for the First Time

Never before has so much energy been generated with solar panels as in the month of May. It is also the first time that this renewable source produced more energy than biomass, according to figures from Energieopwek.nl.

The Dutch solar panels accounted for almost 40 percent of the total amount of sustainably generated energy.

Together with wind energy, there was overproduction for a number of days in May. This means that more energy is generated than is used and exported. “This resulted in negative prices,” says energy expert Martien Visser.

That does not mean that people with solar panels will get money back. “In any case, this is only possible for people with a dynamic contract,” Visser explains. “And even then it is not always the case that you actually have money left after tax has been deducted. In May that was now the case for a few days.”

The total production of renewable energy was 20 percent higher than in May last year.
