Milk is a priority sector for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock given that it contributes to achieving food self-sufficiency in the country.

« Many actions are thus carried out with a view to promoting this promising sector. By way of illustration, we experimented with the cultivation of fodder plants over a total area of 800 ha scattered in all regions of Madagascar with a view to improving animal feed. The production looks good. Points of sale for these fodder will then be set up in the dairy production areas to facilitate the acquisition of these inputs by dairy cow breeders. “. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Dr raymond mentioned it last week during World Milk Day organized by the Malagasy Dairy Board (MDB) via the Profi-Lait project funded by the European Union.

Capacity of 300 liters per day

Furthermore, the state will continue to import dairy cows in order to ensure the genetic improvement of our cattle herd. The objective is to increase milk consumption in the country to 15 litres/inhabitant/year instead of 5 litres/inhabitant/year “, he added. In Africa and Europe, dairy consumption amounts to 40 liters/inhabitant/year and 200 liters/inhabitant/year respectively. Also on World Milk Day, more than 300 students from the Ambohimiandra public primary school were made aware of the benefits of milk and its derivatives. Households are also asked to consume this white gold which is beneficial for human health. It was also an opportunity to inaugurate the 5e milk collection center set up by the MDB in Mandroseza. This center will thus collect the milk production of dairy cow breeders in the district of Antananarivo Avaradrano. It has a capacity of around 300 liters per day. This 5e milk collection center is also equipped with all the necessary equipment used to analyze milk production before it is sold to the general public. He can even transform milk into yogurt, cheese or butter. This will make it possible to provide quality and fresh milk to consumers.

Corn silage production

Speaking of the 1,000 cows imported by the French State, Vice-Minister Dr. Raymond pointed out that these parents have given birth to 80 calves currently. For his part, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of MDB promised breeders the purchase of the production of maize silage which contains more protein for animal feed, in addition to the popularization of fodder crops. It can be kept to cope with the lean season. In effect, ” this animal feed is the basis for improving milk production in the country “, he concluded.
