Train Malfunction in Amsterdam Causes Chaos and Stranded Concertgoers

Visitors to the Harry Styles concert are stranded at Bijlmer Arena station

NOS NewsAmended

There will be no trains running around Amsterdam tonight due to a major malfunction at the traffic control post. The disruption is expected to also have an impact on the morning rush hour, ProRail and NS report. It is still unclear how big the consequences will be.

Train traffic around Amsterdam and Schiphol has been flat for hours due to two disruptions. At the end of yesterday afternoon it became clear that there were problems at the air traffic control post.

The first trains started running again around 8 p.m., but more than half an hour later it went wrong again. According to ProRail, this is the same problem.

The rail manager previously reported that all screens at the traffic control post at Amsterdam Central had failed and that resetting did not help. Due to the problems, traffic control was unable to monitor train traffic. Telephone contact with drivers was still there, but train traffic could not be handled with this.

How that could have happened is unclear. ProRail says it is working “with all its might” on a solution. Last night, the NS called on travelers to arrange alternative transport themselves. The railway company says it will deal “appropriately” with extra transport costs incurred.

Earlier in the evening, people were wondering how to get home:
