In the past ten days, two incidents have involved US and Chinese armed forces in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
After two incidents between the American and Chinese armed forces, the Pentagon on Sunday denounced Beijing’s “increasingly risky” actions in Asia.
“We continue to be concerned about the People’s Liberation Army’s increasingly risky and coercive activities in the region, including in recent days,” Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said. who attends with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin at a security conference in Singapore.
The “dangerous” zigzag of a Chinese ship
These statements come after two incidents involving US and Chinese armed forces in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea in the past ten days.
The US Navy on Saturday accused a Chinese ship of “dangerously” zigzagging around one of its destroyers which was sailing through the Taiwan Strait in the company of a Canadian vessel. The Chinese ship “passed the Chung-Hoon on the port side and crossed its bow at 150 meters. The Chung-Hoon maintained its course and slowed down to 10 (knots) to avoid a collision,” the statement said.
He then “passed in front of the bow of the Chung-Hoon a second time from starboard to port at 2,000 meters” and continued to sail alongside the American destroyer which he approached within 150 meters, adds the text.
Beijing blames the United States and Canada
This incident took place as the USS Chung-Hoon, an Aegis destroyer part of the United States Pacific Fleet, was sailing alongside the Canadian ship HMCS Montreal in the 180 km wide Taiwan Strait which separates the self-governing island of the same name in mainland China.
China did not mention the incident but accused the United States and Canada of “intentionally causing trouble in the Taiwan Strait”, over which it claims sovereign rights.
Washington also accused a Chinese fighter pilot of performing “an unwarranted aggressive maneuver” near a US reconnaissance aircraft flying over the South China Sea on May 26. Beijing accused the American plane of having “deliberately burst” into a training area in China “to carry out reconnaissance (operations).
